Water in ocean near Porto is usually cold, because it is the northern part of Portugal, but locals still manage to swim, so it really depends on which temperatures your body can tolerate. You can get to several lovely beaches nearby Porto.
1. Matosinhos beach is situated very close to Matosinhos Sul metro station, it is nice clean beach though it can be quite windy there. If you go to Matosinhos don't forget to stop by one of the marisco restaurants - the seafood there is fresh and beautifully cooked.
2. Foz beach has such a beautiful area. It couldn’t be reached by metro, but there are frequent buses going there.
3. Espinho beach is beautiful sandy beach. To get there from Sao Bento take a 30 min train to Espinho, which is really nice town with relaxed atmosphere, there is also a swimming pool near the beach with much warmer water than in the ocean. If I remember correctly day at the pool costs around 5 euros.
